There's nothing worse than getting out on the road and breaking down as a result of a broken belt or hose failure along the way. Preventative inspection and replacement of worn belts and hoses is your best insurance against an expensive repair bill while on vacation. Spanial's Service Center is your best local source for belt and hose inspection and replacement. Based in Hatfield, PA Spanial's Service Center is your local expert for belt and hose inspection before that long road trip or vacation.

Failure of a belt or hose can cause an overheated engine, loss of power steering, and loss of the electrical charging system. If one of your vehicle's hoses leaks coolant or the belt turning the water pump snaps, your cooling system can become inoperable. If your engine overheats, it can suffer serious internal damage that requires expensive repairs and can ruin your Summer vacation.

Overheating can occur anytime, but this typically happens in the Summer. During the Summer your vehicle's underhood temperatures are much higher, and excessive heat can trigger or accelerate deterioration of rubber compounds that make up most belts and hoses.

Coolant and Heater Hoses

Hoses, specifically, are your cooling system's weakest structural component. They are made from flexible rubber compounds and absorb vibrations between the engine and radiator, or, in the case of your vehicle's heating hoses, the engine and your vehicle's firewall. The hoses in your vehicle are designed to hold coolant under high pressure plus they are subjected to fluctuating extremes of heat and cold, dirt, oils and sludge, especially in Pennsylvania. Additionally, atmospheric ozone also attacks rubber compounds and weakens them over time.

The most damaging cause of hose failure—electrochemical degradation (ECD) —isn't easy to detect. According to engineers for the Gates Corporation, one of Spanial's hose and parts suppliers, ECD attacks hoses from the inside, and causes tiny cracks. Acids and contaminants in the coolant can then weaken the yarn mesh material that reinforces the hose. Eventually, pinholes can develop or the weakened hose may rupture from heat, pressure, or constant flexing.

The best way to prevent worrying about potential belt or hose problems in you vehicle is to have a thorough inspection of your belts and hoses at Spanial's Service Center.
